Ghatlodiya MLA Bhupendra Patel will be the new chief minister of Gujarat following the resignation of Vijay Rupani on Saturday. The announcement in this regard was made by the BJP after the meeting of the BJP legislative party in Gandhinagar. Several names were doing the rounds for the top post, including that of Nitin Patel and Mansukh Mandaviya.

Notably, Bhupendra Patel, an engineer by education, had won the Assembly poll by a margin of over 1.17 lakh votes against Congress’ Shashikant Patel from the seat which was earlier held by former Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel. Earlier, Bhupendra Patek had held the position of chairman in the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority and also the chairman of the Standing Committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar, who arrived in Gujarat on Sunday to oversee the selection of the new CM, confirmed that Bhupendra Yadav has been elected as the new leader of the BJP Legislative Party. He will become the 17th Chief Minister of Gujarat. “Bhupendra Patel will be sworn in as Gujarat CM soon,” Tomar said.

Reacting to the development, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy said, “It is very good that Bhupendra Patel has been chosen to be the new Gujarat CM. Now BJP coming back to power in Gujarat is certain.”

Union home minister Amit Shah congratulated Bhupendra Patel. He said, “@bhupendrapbjp Hearty congratulations and best wishes on being elected the leader of the BJP legislature party. I believe under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and your leadership, the state’s continuous development journey will get new energy and momentum and Gujarat will continue to be a leader in good governance and public welfare.”

Vijay Rupani described Bhupendra Patel as a “capable” leader. “Bhupendra Patel is capable. We believe BJP will win the upcoming elections in the state under his leadership,” he said.
