Chandigarh: After almost a week of trying to create suspense, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday announced the name of Bhagwant Mann as its chief ministerial candidate in the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections.
Bhagwant Mann’s name had been doing the rounds for quite some time now. In fact, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal said he too had Mann in his mind.
However, last week, Kejriwal launched a phone number where he invited people of Punjab to name their choice for AAP’s Punjab CM candidate.
The phone line was open till January 17. Kejriwal said he would announce the name on Tuesday, January 18.
When the name was announced, it was hardly surprising.
Bhagwant Mann is currently the only AAP MP in Punjab. He has been elected twice from Sangrur constituency, once in 2014 and then again in 2019.
After announcing the name, Kejriwal tweeted, “I congratulate Sardar Bhagwant Mann on being declared CM face of AAP in Punjab. Whole Punjab is looking upto AAP as a hope. Its a huge responsibility and I am sure Bhagwant will bring back smile on the face of every Punjabi.”
Responding to the tweet, Mann wrote, “Sir, I shall do my best to justify the trust & belief that you & the people of Punjab have bestowed upon me. Each and every step that I take forward, will make you & 3 crore Punjabis immensely proud.”
The Punjab Assembly elections which were earlier scheduled to be held on February 14 were postponed to February 20 after the Election Commission was informed about the celebration of Sri Guru Ravidas Ji Jayanti on February 16.
