The Bengaluru Police has arrested six Bangladeshi nationals in a rape and assault case after a video of a woman being brutally assaulted started circulating on social media. The six accused who have been arrested include two women and will be produced before a court today.
The police said that based on the video clip and the questioning of the accused, a case has been registered against them. The crime reportedly took place in Bengaluru six days ago. The victim, too, is a Bangladeshi brought to India for human trafficking.
Two accused shot in the leg
Two of the accused who were brought to the crime spot at around 5 am for reconstructing the crime scene tried to flee forcing the police to open fire. The two accused were shot in the leg.
Police said, “As per information revealed so far, all of them are part of the same group and believed to be from Bangladesh. Due to financial differences, the culprits brutalised the victim who is also said to be a Bangladeshi, brought to India for human trafficking.”
The police said the woman is currently in another state and a team has been sent to trace her. Once she is back, her statement will be recorded before a magistrate.
Video generated outrage
The brutal assault video of the woman caused massive outrage, especially in northeast India as it was assumed that the victim is from the northeast. In fact, after the video went viral, Assam Police has sought information about the accused and offered to reward people who can provide information regarding them.
Assam Police tweeted, “These images are of 5 culprits who are seen brutally torturing & violating a young girl in a viral video. The time or place of this incident is not clear. Anyone with information regarding this crime or the criminals may please contact us. They will be rewarded handsomely.”
