A sessions court in Mumbai on Friday rejected the bail plea of actor Rhea Chakraborty. Apart from Rhea Chakraborty, the bail plea of her brother Showik and other accused in the case have been also rejected.
The actor was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on September 8 in the drugs probe in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. NCB has charged Rhea for procuring drugs for her boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput. The agency has claimed that it has enough evidence to substantiate its claims.
Rhea Chakraborty had earlier filed a bail plea before a magistrate’s court immediately after her arrest. However, the plea was rejected and she was sent to Byculla Jail on September 9.
NCB’s arguments in the court
NCB opposed the bail plea of Rhea and other accused on the ground that they might tamper with evidence, if released. It also said the accused might use their money power and position in the society to win over witnesses.
The anti-drugs agency argued that she had conscious knowledge of drugs use by her boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput. It added that she “made herself part of this offence by procuring drugs.”
NCB alleged that Rhea Chakraborty used her credit card and payment gateways to facilitate financial transactions related to dealing of illicit drug trafficking. Additionally, it said, she also made “voluntary confession” about her involvement during questioning and it is admissible in the court of law. The agency vehemently opposed the actor’s assertion that she had been “coerced into confessing”.
The actor filed the bail plea in the sessions court through her lawyer Satish Maneshinde. The plea provides: “During her (NCB) custody, the applicant (Rhea) was coerced into making self-incriminating confessions. The actor has formally retracted all such incriminating confessions.”
In the plea, she also said that her arrest is “unwarranted and without any justification”. “The actor’s liberty has arbitrarily been curtailed,” it added.
Rhea has also alleged that no female officer was present during her interrogation.
She also claimed that she has been falsely implicated by the NCB in the case and she had not committed any crime, whatsoever.
