The Gujarat government has announced that rickshaw drivers in the state will now have to be in uniform. They will have to wear a blue apron on their clothes to identify themselves as auto drivers in the state, an order from the Ports and Transport Department states.
A July 13 order of the department said that the matter of a separate uniform for auto drivers was under discussion for some time. The order said amendment to the respective act was made to ensure the same. The order said a discussion was also held with various auto rickshaw drivers associations in the state and later the government decided to come up with the order mandating uniforms for auto rickshaw drivers.
It should be noted that this is likely to be an additional burden for drivers who are in dire straits due to the lockdown and resultant loss in business. The drivers association had earlier demanded some help from the state government in this connection.
