Guwahati: Reportedly miffed at the Congress party giving “priority only to elderly leaders” in Assam, four-time MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi resigned from the party on Friday. He also resigned from his membership in the Assam Legislative Assembly. He sent his resignation letter to state Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary.

Kurmi is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) shortly. He claimed that Congress wasn’t listening to its young leaders and was prioritizing only elderly leaders. This, he alleged, was the reason for the party’s situation worsening in all states.

Extremely critical of party leader Rahul Gandhi, Kurmi said, “Rahul Gandhi is unable to shoulder leadership. If he is at the helm, the party won’t move forward.”

He also called the party’s alliance with All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) a mistake, adding that they had said that the party had a good chance of winning this time.
