Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday breathed his last in a hospital in Guwahati at around 5.34 pm.

He was 84-years-old and was availing treatment for post-COVID complications. The news of his demise was revealed by Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Notably, Gogoi, who served twice as a Union minister, has left behind his wife Dolly, son Gaurav and daughter Chandrima. He was the longest-serving chief minister of Assam. He served as the chief minister of the state thrice.

Sarma revealed that his heart stopped functioning after which the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital superintendent declared that the popular leader was no more.

Gogoi was first admitted to (GMCH) on August 26 after testing positive for Covid-19 and was released for a brief period before being readmitted on November 2. His condition deteriorated on November 21, following multi-organ failure and he was put on invasive ventilation.

His body will be taken to his residence in Dispur and from there, it will be taken to Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra where people can pay their homage to the leader on Tuesday, Sarma said.
