Controversial self-styled godman Asaram Bapu has been put on ventilator support after his condition deteriorated. Earlier, he had tested positive for COVID-19 and was shifted to the MG Hospital on Wednesday night after he complained of breathlessness and fever.
Notably, Asaram has been found guilty and convicted for rape and is serving his life sentence at Jodhpur jail. Asaram, who had strong political connections and thousands of followers before landing in trouble, tested positive for the viral infection along with 12 other inmates of the prison.
The self-styled godman’s test was carried out four days ago, whereas the report came on Wednesday evening. The octogenarian had complained of restlessness and his oxygen saturation level was also low after which the jail administration decided to shift him to an ICU unit of the MG hospital. Owing to his medical condition and age, his followers have been demanding that he should be shifted to the Jodhpur AIIMS for treatment.
Asaram supporters throng hospital
Many of his supporters reached the hospital after hearing the news. Notably, every time Asaram is admitted to a hospital for treatment, his supporters gather outside the hospital for his blessings. Some of his supporters also tried to sneak inside the hospital to get a glimpse of Asaram, but their plan was foiled by the police personnel deployed at the hospital.
Asaram is currently serving lifer in Jodhpur prison after being convicted and sentenced in the rape case. Earlier, he had filed an appeal in the Rajasthan High Court against his sentencing in the rape case.
Asaram was sentenced to life imprisonment by an SC/ST court in the case of rape of a 16-year-old girl. In 2013, a minor girl had accused Asaram of raping her at Manai Ashram near Jodhpur. He was later arrested from Indore in Madhya Pradesh in 2014.
