Asaram Bapu tests positive for COVID-19, kept in ICU


Controversial self-styled godman Asaram Bapu who is lodged in jail in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur has tested positive for COVID-19. He has been awarded life imprisonment after being found guilty in a rape case.

Asaram, who had strong political connections and thousands of followers before landing in trouble, has been shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of MDM Hospital in Jodhpur city. According to officials, Asaram along with 12 other inmates of the prison have tested positive for the viral infection.

The self-styled godman’s test was carried out three days ago, whereas the report came on Wednesday evening. The octogenarian had complained of restlessness and his oxygen saturation level was also low after which the jail administration decided to shift him to an ICU unit of the MDM hospital. Owing to his medical condition and age, officials said efforts are being made to shift him to Jodhpur AIIMS.

Asaram supporters throng hospital

Many of his supporters reached the hospital after hearing the news. Notably, every time Asaram is admitted to a hospital for treatment, his supporters gather outside the hospital for his blessings.

Asaram is currently serving lifer in Jodhpur prison after being convicted and sentenced in the rape case. Earlier, he had filed an appeal in the Rajasthan High Court against his sentencing in the rape case.

Asaram was sentenced to life imprisonment by an SC/ST court in the case of rape of a 16-year-old girl. In 2013, a minor girl had accused Asaram of raping her at Manai Ashram near Jodhpur. He was later arrested from Indore in Madhya Pradesh in 2014.
