Elated with the performance of his party— All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen or AIMIM in the Bihar election, Asaduddin Owaisi has said that he will also fight the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Notably, AIMIM won five seats in Bihar elections and Asaduddin Owaisi said that his party will fight for justice in Bihar’s Seemanchal region. The party had erected candidates in 20 Assembly seats.

The party’s victory in five seats has become inconsequential in terms of lending support in case of hung-Assembly as NDA emerged as the clear winner.

According to statistics provided by the Election Commission of India, AIMIM got 1.24 per cent of over 4 crore votes polled—a growth from its performance in the Assembly election in 2015 when it secured less than 0.5 per cent votes in Bihar.

Congress blames AIMIM for its poor show

The Congress has blamed the AIMIM for its poor show in the Bihar election and said AIMIM candidates resulted in bifurcation of anti-BJP votes. Asaduddin Owaisi, however, has sharply reacted to the Congress’s claim.

Owaisi said he was running a political party that has the right to contest the elections. Reacting to Congress’ criticism, Asaduddin Owaisi said: “You mean we should not fight elections. You (Congress) went and sat in Shiv Sena’s lap (in Maharashtra). I will fight in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and will fight every election in the country.”

“Do I need to ask anyone’s permission to fight the polls?” he said when asked whether the party would contest in any other state. He, however, did not clarify whether the party would contest on its own or in alliance with other parties.

“AIMIM will fight in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Time only will tell with whom we will ally,” Owaisi added.

Asaduddin Owaisi attacks Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury

Attacking Congress leader from West Bengal, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for reportedly calling AIMIM as ‘vote cutter’ in the Bihar polls, Owaisi sought to know what he has done for the welfare of Muslims in his constituency.

“Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has to respond why the condition of Muslims is so bad in his own constituency. He has to say what he did for Muslims,” he said.

“AIMIM will fight the polls in West Bengal. AIMIM is coming to Bengal,” he added.

Asaduddin Owaisi is often criticised by Congress and other parties allegedly as the “B-team” of BJP. Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM seems to have cut big time into the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan vote in the Seemanchal region in the third phase of the polls, according to poll pundits.

Chowdhury had on Tuesday accused the AIMIM of acting as a vote-cutter in the Bihar elections. “BJP’s tact of using (Asaduddin) Owaisi Sahab’s party in the Bihar elections has succeeded to an extent. All secular parties should be alert about vote cutter Owaisi Sahab,” he had said.
