Kashmir became the latest state to introduce severe lockdown in some parts of the state. Authorities sealed off the Lal Chowk and 67 other areas in Srinagar on Sunday. These areas have been declared containment zones after a sudden surge in COVID-19 positive cases in the last one week.
The lockdown will be imposed in 68 containment zones of the city from Monday, the officials said. The authorities said strict action will be taken against those violating the lockdown and no activity will be allowed in these areas without a valid pass. The decision to reimpose the lockdown in the city was taken at a meeting late Saturday evening. Earlier Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal and Kerala among others had brought in lockdown to prevent the spread of the disease.
Srinagar has reported 1,611 cases so far of which 1,075 are active. Jammu and Kashmir has over 10,000 COVID-19 cases most of which are in Kashmir valley.
