In a latest twist in the tale, the Mumbai Police on Wednesday registered a fresh FIR against Republic TV’s editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami for allegedly assaulting a woman cop and resisting police officials who came to arrest him. Notably, Arnab Goswami was arrested on Wednesday morning in connection with an abetment to suicide case.
In the fresh FIR, Arnab has been charged under IPC sections 353 (assault to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).
Goswami was produced before a court in Mumbai after his arrest where his lawyer claimed that the senior journalist was assaulted by two police officials who went to arrest him at his residence.
He further said that Goswami’s family members were pushed and the house was cordoned off for three hours. “There are abrasions on his left hand and an existing injury on his hand was tried to be torn apart by police,” said the lawyer Gaurav Parker.
Political reactions after arrest of Arnab Goswami
The arrest of Arnab Goswami evoked a strong reaction from BJP leaders, who criticised the Maharashtra government’s action and equated it with the imposition of Emergency.
Union home minister Amit Shah said: “Congress and its allies have shamed democracy once again. Blatant misuse of state power against Republic TV & Arnab Goswami is an attack on individual freedom and the 4th pillar of democracy. It reminds us of the Emergency. This attack on free press must be and WILL BE OPPOSED.”
Union information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar said: “We condemn the attack on press freedom in #Maharashtra. This is not the way to treat the Press. This reminds us of the emergency days when the press was treated like this.”
Former Mahrashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said: “Arnab is paying the price of exposing every plot and move by Congress party to protect & encourage the ones instigating communal violence. Who is sheltering Tukde Tukde Gang & Palghar priest murderers? India wants an answer from Sonia ji & Rahul Gandhi! #EmergencyInMaharashtra”
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Rout said: “The law is followed in Maharashtra. Police can take action if they have evidence against anyone. Since the formation of Thackeray government, no action has been taken against anyone for revenge.”
