Army Colonel accused of raping a Russian woman arrested while trying to flee


An Army colonel who is facing rape charges was arrested in Kanpur while he was trying to flee. Col Neeraj Gahlot is accused of raping his civilian friend’s wife. The victim is of Russian origin and Colonel Gahlot allegedly raped her after intoxicating her husband at the Officers’ Mess in the Cantonment area.

Army Colonel was evading arrest

After a complaint was registered, police started a search for Colonel Neeraj Gahlot. His mobile location was traced in the vicinity of the Officers’ Mess on Monday evening.

He, however, was evading his arrest, said additional superintendent of police (Cantonment Circle) Nikhil Pathak. SP (East) Raj Kumar Agarwal said that the colonel was arrested while trying to flee to an unknown place to avoid arrest.

The incident

According to the complainant, his wife is of Russian descent and has been living in India for 10 years.

The accused allegedly had invited his civilian friend to the Officer’s Mess and gave him an intoxicating drink which made him unconscious, said police adding the Army officer subsequently raped his friend’s wife.

The accused also allegedly assaulted the woman when she put up a resistance.

The woman narrated her ordeal to her husband when he regained consciousness. The victim’s husband accompanied her to the Cantonment police station on December 12 to file a complaint. He told police that his wife was a Russian and had been living in India for the last 10 years.

After raping the woman, the colonel took leave from his bosses and went underground to evade arrest, said an official.

The rape survivor was subsequently produced before a judicial magistrate who recorded her statement under section 164 of the CrPC, said Pathak, adding the statement, however, is yet to be shown to the police.

The Colonel has been charged under several sections of the Indian Penal Code.
