Toronto: Anita Anand, a Canadian politician of Indian origin, has been named the new defence minister in the reshuffled Justin Trudeau government.
The 54-year-old is among the three Indian origin politicians who won in the snap elections last month that saw Trudeau retain power.
Anita Anand’s predecessor Harjit Sajjan, also of Indian origin, had been criticized for his handling of sexual misconduct in the military.
Anand’s appointment is expected to send across a message to survivors and their families that the Canadian government is serious about tackling the crisis.
Anand was a corporate lawyer, with extensive experience of corporate governance. She first became an MP from Oakville in Ontario in 2019. During the pandemic, she served as vaccine minister and was in -charge of efforts to get Covid-19 vaccines for the country.
