Ancient Buddha relic found in Pakistan smashed for being ‘un-Islamic’

Local construction workers smashed a Buddha statue that was found while digging the foundation for a house in Pakistan’s Mardan district in Pakhtunkhwa province.

The workers allegedly smashed the relic stating it was unIslamic. The statue was discovered in Mardan’s Takht Bhai area, which was a part of the Gandhara civilisation.

A viral video of the destruction shows construction workers smashing the statue using a sledgehammer and expressing resentment against the unIslamic relic.

Local media quoted a Pakistan tourism department official as saying that authorities are looking into the matter.

Media quoted one Abdul Samad, director, archaeology and museums, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as saying that the authorities have located the area, where the incident occurred and those involved in vandalism would be held accountable.

Takht Bhai is known for its relics and was excavated in 1836 for the first time. Archaeologists have since then found hundreds of relics made of clay, stucco, and terracotta in the area.
