The Standing Committee of the AMC has approved a proposal to give Super Star Amusement the contract to set up new rides at the amusement park under the PPP model in Vastrapur.
This is the same company whose amusement ride – The Discovery Ride- had crashed in 2019 killing two and injuring several others.
Under the PPP model, the company will be setting up four big rides and 12 other small rides as per the MOU entered with the agency.
Interestingly, the company was also given the contract of the Jaldhara Water Park and later the AMC had to drag the company to court to get it vacated from the land.
Other works approved by AMC standing committee
The Standing Committee of the AMC approved 30 of the 33 work proposals put before it. The other works approved by the Standing Committee include the building of a maternity home in Shahpur at a cost of Rs2.75 crore.
A library and multiplex hall in Behrampura at a cost of Rs2.54 crore and Rs8.70 cr for resurfacing of the road in Maninagar was also approved. Rs10 crore was approved for drainage line rehabilitation in Naranpura ward.
Standing Committee Chairman Amul Bhatt said that the request by the Water Supply Committee to set up a drainage pumping station and to get satellite images of drainage lines were also approved. He said the committee has set aside a demand for Rs1.55lakh per month to start a media room in the publicity department and hire necessary manpower for the same. The demand will be discussed with the concerned officials he said.
What was the Discovery Ride tragedy?
The Discovery Ride at the Kankaria Amusement Park had collapsed on July 14, 2019 killing two and injuring 29. Super Star Amusement was the owner of the Discovery Ride that collapsed at Kankaria.
An inquiry into the July 14, 2019 accident of Discovery Ride had found that 11 of the operational 23 rides had some or the other defect.
No action was taken against the company even after the findings of the inquiry and neither was it blacklisted.
