In a major cause of concern for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) that is leading the battle against coronavirus in the city, an assistant commissioner and a staff of the civic body have tested positive for COVID-19. Both have been admitted to a hospital for treatment.
The assistant commissioner who has tested positive was entrusted with the responsibility of managing the civic body’s coronavirus battle in the Chandlodiya-Ghatlodiya area. Notably, the officer had taken part in a meeting on Wednesday that was attended by a deputy commissioner and other officials of the civic body.
After the duo tested positive for the deadly virus, 13 other employees of the municipal corporation, who were in contact with them, have been quarantined at home as a precautionary measure.
Sources said the assistant commissioner was not feeling well for the past two days, but still rendered his duties during this crisis hour. Following this, his sample was taken for testing and his report came positive on Thursday.
Meanwhile, with the addition of the 42 fresh cases till 10 am on Thursday, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Ahmedabad has increased to 492—the highest in Gujarat. The city has also reported the maximum number of deaths in the state. After the three deaths reported on Wednesday and a death reported on Thursday, the death toll due to the deadly virus increased to 17 in Ahmedabad.
