AMC elections: Over 30 crorepati candidates in fray

With elections for Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) around-the-corner, all political parties in the fray have brainstormed for days to select the right candidates for the polls. Now, it has come to the fore that over 30 candidates fielded by two major political parties—BJP and the Congress—have assets of over Rs 1 crore.

Also, around 10 per cent of the candidates, who have not even done matriculation, are trying their luck in the civic polls. BJP candidate from Thaltej, Hitesh Barot, has assets worth Rs 33 crore. Congress candidate from Maktampura has shares worth Rs 16 crore and land worth Rs 14 crore.

Pradip Dave, the BJP candidate from Stadium ward, and Pritish Mehta, the BJP candidate from Paldi, each have over 1 kg gold. Interestingly, candidates from the city’s West Zone are financially stronger than others. Out of BJP’s 10 richest candidates, seven are from the West Zone, whereas the remaining three are from eastern part of the city.

Over 10 per cent of all BJP and Congress candidates in the city own luxury cars. Congress candidate from Amraiwadi, Parvati Parmar, is the least educated candidate contesting the polls. She has studied till third standard, whereas there are four other candidates who have studied up to the seventh standard.

Also, four candidates have said that they hold licensed revolver in the poll affidavit submitted by them. These four candidates include BJP’s Hitesh Barot, Prakash Gurjar from Bapunagar, Mahadev Desa from Saijpur and Bharat Patel from Shahibaug. Notably, candidates contesting polls have to submit their licensed guns when the Model Code of Conduct is in effect.

Over 50 candidates in AMC polls have criminal cases

At a time when there is a serious debate going on decriminalization of politics, parties tend to claim that they only give tickets to candidates with clean image. However, both BJP and Congress have given ticket to candidates with criminal history. In fact, tickets have been given by BJP to three candidates who have attempt to murder charge against them. Congress too has given ticket to one such candidate.  There are around 50 candidates trying their luck in the civic elections who have criminal charges pending against them.
