Chandigarh: Amid speculations, former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh announced on Wednesday that he would form a new political party.
The name of the new party will be announced once it is cleared by the Election Commission, Amarinder Singh said at a press conference in Chandigarh, adding that his lawyers were working on it.
He had stepped down from the post of Punjab CM last month citing humiliation. Charanjit Singh Channi was subsequently sworn in as the new CM.
Shortly thereafter, there had been talks of Amarinder Singh forming his own party.
Sidhu reacts to the announcement
Punjab Congress president Navjyot Singh Sidhu reacted strongly to Amarinder Singh’s announcement. “We the 78 MLAs of Congress, could never imagine, what we received an arm-twisted, ED controlled BJP loyal Chief Minister of Punjab @capt_amarinder… who sold the interests of Punjab to save his skin ! You were the negative force stalling Justice & development of Punjab,” he wrote on his Twitter handle.
Amarinder slams Randhawa
At the conference, Amarinder Singh also slammed Punjab Home Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa for his remarks related to national security.
Randhawa had said that investigation would be carried out to know if Amarinder’s long-time friend and Pakistan journalist Aroosa Alam had ISI links. This triggered a war of words between the duo.
“They mock me regarding security measures. My basic training is that of a soldier. I have been in the service for 10 years – from my training period to the time I left the Army, so I know the basics,” he added.
On her part, Aroosa has termed the allegations “outrageous and utter disappointing” and has said she is willing to join any probe.
