Congress performance in civic body polls
The Congress has always performed better in taluka and district panchayat elections and so the BJP is determined to ensure a repeat of its brilliant performance in the six municipal corporation elections.
The BJP won all the six municipal corporations of Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar, and Bhavnagar.
BJP won 483 of the 575 seats, while Congress won 55, AAP 27, AIMIM 7, BSP 3, and one seat went to an independent. The AAP and the All-India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) were contesting for the first time in Gujarat and the former won 27 seats in Surat while the latter won seven in Ahmedabad.
Congress put up one of its worst performances in the six municipal corporation elections.
The second phase of the local body elections in Gujarat will be held on February 28. Elections will be organised for municipalities, district panchayats, and taluka panchayats. The results for the second phase will be declared on March 2.
