Aligarh may soon be renamed as Harigarh, proposal sent to UP govt

Aligarh district panchayat chief Vijay Singh has said that the zila panchayat board has unanimously cleared a proposal to rename Aligarh as Harigarh. The proposal has been cleared by the board on Monday and has been sent to the Yogi Adityanath government for a nod. Notably, the proposal in this regard was floated by block panchayat leaders Umesh Yadav and Kohri Singh.

If cleared by the BJP-led UP government, Aligarh would join a list of places that were renamed. One of the most prominent renaming exercises in the recent past was of Allahabad, which was renamed as Prayagraj ahead of the Kumbh Mela in 2019.

Following the development, Singh said, “We had a meeting of the zila panchayat board yesterday (Monday). Some proposals were passed in the meeting. The first proposal was about renaming Aligarh to Harigarh. It was passed unanimously. We have sent it to the chief minister. I hope it will be approved.”

Another proposal

Apart from the proposal to rename Aligarh to Harigarh, the zila panchayat also cleared a proposal to rename the Dhanipur airstrip in Aligarh to Kalyan Singh airstrip.  The state government had also renamed other places in Uttar Pradesh in the past. Mughal Sarai was renamed as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar and Faizabad as Ayodhya. Earlier, the state government had made its stand clear that it will rename places whenever there is a need.

In a similar exercise in Mainpuri, the newly elected Zila Panchayat chief Archana Bhadauriya presided over the first meeting of Mainpuri Zila panchayat members who unanimously passed a resolution to change the name of Mainpuri to Mayan Nagar in the name of Mayan Rishi. Even though the members of the Samajwadi Party opposed the move, the resolution was passed by 19 against 11 votes.
