Akhilesh Yadav to fight Uttar Pradesh Assembly election from Karhal

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav will fight his first Assembly elections from Karhal constituency in Mainpuri district.

His candidature was declared by Prof Ram Gopal Yadav, SP general secretary.

Karhal is a stronghold of SP, having voted for it in all elections since 1993 barring the one in 2002. Mainpur Lok Sabha constituency was held by SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav for five terms.

For past few days, the buzz of Akhilesh Yadav contesting from Karhal had been doing rounds; however, the official confirmation came on Saturday.

Currently a Member of Parliament from Azamgarh, Akhilesh Yadav is the youngest person to have held the office of CM in UP.

After taking over as CM, he had resigned as Kannauj MP in May 2012 and become member of UP Legislative Council. However, his party lost the 2017 elections.

Akhilesh then fought the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Azamgarh.

Thus, this is the first time that he will be contesting in an Assembly election.

In an interview, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has said that her party would not have any issue supporting Akhilesh after the elections if their agenda for women and youth were fulfilled.

In another development, former Congress MP Praveen Aron and his wife Supriya Aron (who had been declared Congress candidate from Bareilly cantt) joined the Samajwadi Party.
