- They have called the complaint against Lakshadweep filmmaker Sultana false and unjustified; she had alleged that Centre had used Covid as ‘bioweapon’ in the UT
Lakshadweep: Over a dozen BJP leaders have tendered their resignations in protest after Lakshadweep filmmaker Aisha Sultana was booked for sedition and hate speech. The police had registered an FIR against her following a complaint by Lakshadweep BJP chief Abdul Khader Haji against her comment alleging that the Centre had used Covid-19 as a ‘bioweapon’ in the Union territory. The protesting BJP leaders have called Haji’s complaint false
Haji’s complaint had accused Sultana of spreading false news about spread of Covid-19 cases in the Union territory. In their signed letter to Haji, the BJP leaders called the complaint false and unjustified and accused him of ruining her family and future.
Indicating their support for Sultana, they said that she had shared her opinion in the media. “Based on your complaint to the police, there has been a case registered against Aisha Sultana who, during a discussion, talked about from not having any Covid cases to rampant cases with the arrival of the present administrator in Lakshadweep and his unscientific, irresponsible decisions.”
The letter added that several BJP leaders of Lakshadweep had already spoken about various wrongdoings by administrator Praful Khoda Patel and the district collector. According to a news report, eight BJP leaders had resigned in May in protest against Patel’s actions.
The leaders claimed that Patel’s actions were anti-people and anti-democracy. “The BJP in Lakshadweep is fully aware of how present administrator Patel’s actions are anti-people, anti-democracy and causing extreme suffering among people,” the letter read.
During a debate on a Malayalam TV channel, Sultana had said, “Lakshadweep had zero cases of Covid-19. Now it is reporting a daily spike of 100 cases. What the Centre has deployed is a bioweapon. I can say this clearly that the central government has deployed bioweapon.” In the past, Patel has been accused of doing away with the rule of quarantine for those entering Lakshadweep.
Following Sultana’s comments, BJP workers had started protesting on the streets. Subsequently, Haji had lodged a police complaint accusing her of “anti-national” comments “tarnishing the patriotic image of the central government”.
Responding to the sedition case, Sultana had taken to Facebook with a post stating, “An FIR has been registered. However, only truth shall prevail. BJP leader who filed complaint is from Lakshadweep. As he continues to betray his homeland, I will continue fighting for it. Tomorrow, those who betrayed will be isolated.”
“To the people of Lakshadweep: The sea protects you and you protect the sea. Those betrayed have fear but we do not. I did not raise my voice to be silent when weakened. My voice is going to be louder from now on,” she added.
