Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, whose party AIMIM is contesting the local body elections scheduled later this month, will be in Gujarat on Sunday. The itinerary for his visit has been finalised, which is likely to give a much-required impetus to his party workers who are trying their best to woo Muslim voters in the state.
On Sunday, Owaisi is likely to address a rally in Bharuch, which is considered a Congress bastion. On the same day, he will address a rally at Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad. Earlier, there were reports that Owaisi will be visiting the state on February 4. However, now the same has changed to February 7.
AIMIM candidates for AMC
Sources said that the party might declare the candidates for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections during Asaduddin Owaisi’s visit. The party had declared its entry in the state after the declaration of the dates for the local body polls. It has also tied-up with Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) for the civic body elections.
A former Congress MLA Sabir Kabliwala has been made the president of AIMIM’s Gujarat unit.
Division of Muslim votes
The entry of AIMIM will result in the division of Muslim votes and will add to the difficulties of Congress candidates, which eventually will result in an easier victory for BJP candidates.
In Ahmedabad, there are several Muslim dominated seats that have traditionally been a Congress bastion. These seats include Sarkhej, Shahpur, Dariyapur, Jamalpur, Juhapura, Danilimda and Kalupur among others. However, whether Congress will be able to retain these seats in this election is doubtful considering the present political scenario.
Apart from AIMIM, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will be also contesting the polls and has already declared its candidates for the same. AAP is projecting itself as an alternative to BJP and is trying to woo voters in several pockets of Ahmedabad citing its achievements in Delhi.
