Entry of AIMIM, AAP heats up civic polls in Gujarat

The entry of smaller parties such as Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP and Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM has heated up the battle for civic elections in Gujarat. The entry of these parties will definitely result in a division of votes. And, in such a situation, it will be the Congress that is likely to lose elections, whereas the BJP is supposed to benefit from the entry of these parties.

Why it is a loss for Congress?

The selection of candidates in Muslim dominated areas has become a headache for the Congress and the party is unable to decide. The AAP and the AIMIM are also fielding their candidates from these areas, which is likely to result in division of Congress votes. The division of Muslim votes will add to the difficulties of Congress candidates, which eventually will result in an easier victory for BJP candidates.

In Ahmedabad, there are several Muslim dominated seats that have traditionally been a Congress bastion. These seats include Sarkhej, Shahpur, Dariyapur, Jamalpur, Juhapura, Danilimda and Kalupur among others. However, whether Congress will be able to retain these seats in this election is doubtful considering the present political scenario.

Victory of Muslim candidates

During the last election in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, 20 Muslim candidates had won the election. However, the number is likely to drop around 50 per cent this year.

Notably, AIMIM, which will be contesting its first election in Gujarat, will be fielding its candidates from Muslim dominated areas. This would impact the result of Congress candidates.

BJP leaders unhappy

The BJP’s new guideline for the selection of candidates for the civic polls has not gone down well with several leaders. Notably, the saffron party has decided to not field any candidate above 60 years. This apart, those leaders who have completed three tenures are not going to get a ticket. While leaders who will not be able to contest polls due to the new guideline are unhappy, it will create opportunities for young leaders.
