Ahmedabad uses hostel for care, management of asymptomatic COVID-19 cases

In a step further in the battle against coronavirus pandemic in Ahmedabad, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Saturday started a COVID Care Centre at a hostel building in the city.

The facility will be used to provide care and management to COVID-19 positive patients in the age group of 18-60 years who have not shown symptoms of the viral infection. The civic authorities have clarified that only such asymptomatic cases that have no complications will be kept at the facility.

Municipal commissioner Vijay Nehra said the strategy to separately keep asymptomatic patients in the new facility has been adopted to ensure that hospital beds, which are limited in number, can remain available for critical cases that need medical care.

Nehra announced the same on the micro-blogging website Twitter. The bureaucrat tweeted: “From today @AmdavadAMC is starting a #CovidCareCentre at a Hostel Building. This facility will provide care & Mgmt for asymptomatic COVID positive patients (18-60 yr) with no complications. This strategy will leave Hospital beds for critical cases who need medical care”.

This apart, the civic authorities have also decided to make use of people who have successfully defeated the deadly virus and emerged victorious after successful treatment as volunteers in the new facility.  The decision was taken after many people who emerged victorious in the battle against COVID-19 offered to be volunteers at the facility.

Nehra said the enhanced immunity of “coronabeaters” will be helpful in the fight against the deadly virus.

The municipal commissioner tweeted: “#CoronaBeaters to be #CoronaWarriors Those who have successfully defeated #COVID19 & recovered fully have offered to be volunteers at CovidCareCentre of @AmdavadAMC. Their enhanced immunity will be helpful in the #FightAgainstCOVID19 #AmdavadFightsCorona”.

The step taken by the civic authorities immediately garnered appreciation on social media.

With the addition of the 75 fresh cases in the past 24 hours ending 10 am on Saturday, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Ahmedabad has increased to 228—the highest in Gujarat. The city has also reported the maximum number of deaths in the state. After one death was reported on Friday, the death toll due to the deadly virus has increased to seven in Ahmedabad.

Unfortunately, many of the positive cases detected in the city were found to have no symptoms of the virus, which makes their detection more difficult.
