The Ahmedabad Medical Association has approached the Gujarat High Court seeking direction for the state to increase the number of COVID-19 testing.

The association believes that it is the key to identifying COVID-19 patients early and also breaking the chain to stop the spread of the disease.

Local media said the petition pointed out to how the number of testing being carried out in the state was disproportionately lower than its population. It appealed that the number of tests should be in tandem with the population.  Gujarat has 23 government and 18 private laboratories capable of testing for COVID-19.

Nineteen districts of the state still lack testing facilities. The number of COVID-19 cases in the state has crossed 45,000.

On Friday Gujarat recorded 949 new COVID-19 cases, the highest ever recorded so far. This is the fifth time that the per day cases have crossed the 900 mark.

The death toll in the state stands at 2,108. The state recorded 17 new deaths due to the disease on Friday.

The state has recorded over 800 cases for four consecutive days while it has recorded over 700 cases five times so far.
