Ahmedabad: The entry of the Omicron variant of coronavirus in Gujarat has prompted health authorities to brace up for spread of the infection in coming days. The Ahmedabad Civil Hospital in Asarwa opened an isolation ward for Omicron patients on Monday.
Gujarat’s first case of Omicron was confirmed in Jamnagar on Saturday.
A 72-year-old NRI who had come from Zimbabwe tested positive for Covid-19, after which his sample was sent for sequencing to the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC) in Gandhinagar and National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune.
The GBRC confirmed the presence of the new variant. Subsequently, the health officials undertook contact tracing.
Two of the Jamnagar patient’s contacts have tested positive for Covid. Their samples have been sent for genome sequencing to GBRC and NIV.
A total of 10 samples of suspect patients from Gujarat have been sent for sequencing.
The first two cases of the new variant were reported from Karnataka. Cases have also been reported from Delhi, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, besides Gujarat.
The total tally of Omicron in India is 21.
