- 101 high-rise buildings too among 219 units without valid fire safety clearance; they have been given 15 days to fix issues, failing which they will be sealed
Ahmedabad: Following the rap of the Gujarat High Court, the fire department and the Estate department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation have initiated a drive to crack down on units without fire safety NOC or building use (BU) permission. As part of its crackdown on buildings without a valid fire safety NOC, the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) has started inspecting schools, hospitals and commercial buildings. On Tuesday, the department had issued a total of 219 notices under the Fire Safety Act.
Those issued notices on Friday include 40 schools, 78 hospitals and 101 high-rise buildings. They have been given 15 days to ensure compliance with fire safety rules and begin the process of procuring fire safety NOC.
According to AFES officials, during inspection, the fire department personnel saw what fire equipment the unitsd already have, what is missing or what more they need to get an NOC from the department. They informed the concerned owners about these and issued a notice to them. The latter have been given 15 days’ time to fix the issues and initiate the procedure to get a fire safety NOC from the department. Failing this, the units will be sealed.
A senior AFES officer said that notices are being issued as per the list submitted to the High Court by the department.
Action comes after HC rap
It may be recalled that the HC had pulled up the AMC for not doing enough to ensure fire safety in the city. It had also asked for details of buildings like schools, hospitals and commercial units that did not have BU permission or fire safety NOC. It had later asked the state government and the civic bodies to not issue fire NOCs to units that did not have BU permission.
The HC has allowed the state government and the municipal corporations four weeks’ time to draw a detailed plan of action to deal with buildings that do not have a BU permission. Meanwhile, it suggested that fire NOC could be issued under two categories—buildings with BU permission and buildings without it.
