Abandoned bags in Delhi create scare ahead of Republic Day

  • The bags found near Metro pillar in Trilokpuri in Delhi were found harmless upon inspection

New Delhi: Days after an abandoned bag containing a crude bomb was found in the Ghazipur flower market in Delhi, two more unclaimed bags were found in Trilokpuri area.

The police received a call on Wednesday informing them about the two bags near pillar number 59 of Metro flyover in Trilokpuri.

After the finding of an improvised explosive device (IED) in the bag in Ghazipur market on January 14, this information triggered some anxiety with the Republic Day nearing. The bomb disposal squad and other police officials reached the spot.

“A PCR call was received regarding two unidentified bags. Our teams reached the spot and found that nothing suspicious is there. It’s a case of bag lifting. We’ve identified the person and will handover the belongings,” DCP (East), Delhi, Priyanka Kashyap was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Items including documents, laptop, mobile phone, etc. were found in the bag. The owner was identified as Somesh Gupta.

Security in and around the national capital has already been tightened.
