The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday announced that it will contest the upcoming local body elections in Gujarat. The announcement was made by the party’s Delhi MP and spokesperson Atishi.
While releasing the first list of 504 candidates on Sunday, AAP has asserted that it will contest from all the seats in the local body polls. The party’s Gujarat chief Gopal Italia said 31 per cent of candidates in the first list are women.
Notably, elections in Gujarat’s various local bodies including municipal corporations, municipalities, and district and taluka panchayats are likely to be held in February this year. The proposed local body elections, which include polls in six municipal corporations and 55 municipalities, were initially scheduled in November last year but were postponed for three months due to the pandemic.
AAP will do well
During the announcement, Atishi expressed confidence that AAP will perform well in the polls and emerge as a strong alternative to the ruling BJP. “AAP will contest elections on all seats in the local bodies polls in the state for the first time. With this, the party will enter the electoral politics of Gujarat as a strong alternative to the BJP. AAP will work to remove the BJP from power,” Atishi said.
The AAP spokesperson also added that the party will not remain confined to local body polls, but will also contest the Assembly polls in Gujarat. She said that the citizens of the state want an alternative. Atishi also said that the party is entering electoral politics in Gujarat because of the demand of the people.
AAP attacks BJP
The AA P lawmaker also attacked the BJP for playing politics of allurement and intimidation. “If there is a leader in the country who is not scared of the BJP, it is Arvind Kejriwal. And if there is one party that the BJP cannot scare or allure, then it is AAP. We, the soldiers of Arvind Kejriwal, will continue our fight for truth,” she said.
Atishi said AAP will not allow corrupt candidates to contest the polls.
