Cyclonic Storm Mocha has weakened into a depression hours after it made landfall and killed at least three in Myanmar Sunday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm weakened near the north-northeast of Nyaung-U (Myanmar) and Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and was predicted to continue the trend for the next few hours.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), “By Monday morning, Cyclonic Storm Mocha was downgraded from its severe status and was steadily weakening over land.”
Though Cyclone Mocha did not make landfall at the world’s largest refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, but still destroyed hundreds of makeshift shelters in the camp. The storm had largely passed by late Sunday.
According to PTI, At least 3 deaths had been reported earlier in Myanmar, and several injuries were reported in neighboring Bangladesh, which was spared the predicted direct hit. Bangladesh’s disaster official Kamrul Hasan said the cyclone caused “no major damage” in his country, but landslides and floods are still hitting the area.
Rescuers early Monday evacuated about 1,000 people trapped by seawater 3.6 meters (12 feet) deep along western Myanmar’s coast after a powerful cyclone injured hundreds and cut off communications. The extent of the damage and the death toll were not yet known.
Myanmar’s Meteorological Department said, ” Mocha made landfall near Sittwe township with winds blowing up to 209 kilometers (130 miles) per hour. High winds crumpled cell phone towers during the day, cutting off communications.
Meanwhile, A leader of the Rakhine Youths Philanthropic Association in Sittwe, , on condition of anonymity, said,” Cyclone Mocha ravaged Myanmar Strong winds injured more than 700 of about 20,000 people who were sheltering in sturdier buildings on the highlands of Sittwe township.
