Violence has erupted in Manipur over the demand to include the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category. Army and paramilitary forces have been deployed in Manipur following clashes and arson during protests against the inclusion of the majority Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category. The administration has clamped curfew in eight districts including Imphal, Churachandpur and Kangpokpi to control the situation. Besides, the state government has banned mobile internet for the next five days.

The district administration ordered to clamp curfew with immediate effect till further orders in the revenue jurisdiction of Churachandpur district, especially Kangwal, Tuibong and Chaurachandpur subdivisions. Gathering of five or more persons at one place has also been banned in the entire jurisdiction of Bishnupur district. A flag march was conducted today by the Army and Assam Rifles to keep the situation under control.
Talking to the media, on Thursday, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said that incidents of clashes and vandalism have come to the fore in some places since 24 hours. Biren Singh blamed “prevailing misunderstandings between two sections of society” for the violence in the state during protests against the inclusion of the majority Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category. In a video message shared on Twitter, he said long-term grievances of communities will be suitably addressed in consultations with them and their representatives.
