Quad Leaders Summit to be held in Sydney on May 24, maritime security to be discussed: USA

The United States of America yesterday clarified that at present it has no plans to add new members to the Quad. Responding to media questions about the expansion of the Quad, the White House press secretary said that, having been established only two years ago, the Quad is still a relatively young participant and currently has no plans to include new members. He further said that for now, the Quad members have agreed that they will focus to strengthen many forces of the Quad.

The White House Press Secretary added that the Quad is a group of four democratic countries, India, Australia, America and Japan, whose objective is to keep the Indo-Pacific region free, open and prosperous. Earlier, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that he will host the Quad Leaders Summit in Sydney on May 24 and will have the opportunity to work with the US, India and Japan as a partner.

The Quad will highlight opportunities to strengthen mutual partnership especially on climate, global health, infrastructure etc. The topmost priority of the Quad is to ensure a fair distribution of the priorities of the Indo-Pacific region. Hence there will be no discussion about the expansion of the Quad now.

PM Narendra Modi will hold a meeting with US President Joe Biden and his counterparts from Australia and Japan at the ‘Quad’ summit in Sydney on May 24.
