Indians stranded in Sudan, without food – water for many days, stay in bunkers due to airport closure

Nearly 4000 Indians have been trapped in Sudan due to the ongoing civil war. Fighting broke out on April 14 between the military controlled by General Abdel Fattah Burhan, who is also the country`s head, and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by General Mohammed Hamden Dangelo.

Out of total 4000 Indians, majority of the Indians are trapped in the city of Khartoum. Their situation is very delicate. Due to continuous firing and shelling yesterday, even basic necessities of life became scarce. Situation of the Keralan families is worst, they are not in position to get drinking water.

According to media reports, they said,” water and electricity sources have been damaged due to airstrikes which has made our situation more fragile. The airport is also closed due to continuous attacks. We are constantly being told to stay at home. It is quiet outside. Many families are trapped in bunkers without any food and water. We don’t know how long this will last.”

There are about 4,000 Indian citizens in Sudan, and according to the Indian embassy in Khartoum of them, about 1,500 are longtime residents. According to media reports, “An Indian ex-serviceman. Albert Augustine, who was working in Sudan, was killed by a stray bullet.”
