Amid high security deployment, the two were presented in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Dinesh Gautam on Thursday morning. Atiq Ahmed was brought to Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj from Gujarat’s Sabarmati Jail and his brother from Bareilly jail.
Ahmed and Ashraf, alias Khalid Azim, will be kept in Naini jail in Prayagraj till April 26, said advocate Vikram Singh, the counsel for Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya.
Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 killing of BSP MLA Raju Pal, and his two police security guards were shot dead outside his home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj area on February 24 this year. The daylight killing on a busy street had raised questions over law and order in Uttar Pradesh.
Atiq Ahmed is also an accused in the killing of lawyer Umesh Pal, who was a key witness in the 2005 killing of BSP lawmaker Raju Pal and was shot dead outside his home in Prayagraj on February 24.
Meanwhile, gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed reportedly broke down in a Prayagraj court after learning about his son Asad’s death on Thursday afternoon. Atiq’s son Asad and an accomplice, Ghulam, both wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case were killed in an encounter with UP Police’s Special Task Force (STF) in Jhansi.
