The condition of end stage lung failure is seen in patients facing diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary fibrosis, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension. The lungs for the transplantation were brought from Surat to Ahmedabad by a charter plane and then taken to the hospital through a special green corridor by the city police team. The team led by Dr. Bhavin Desai, Senior Consultant, KD Hospital and Dr. Sandeep Attwar, Program Director, Kim Hospital and Head, Heart Lung Transplant, performed a successful 12-hour surgery.
The surgery to transplant both the lungs is considered to be very complicated because a special care has to be taken in this surgery. The lungs should remain outside the human body for short duration of time. Dr. Mukesh Patel, Senior Consultant, KD Hospital said that the lungs act as the gatekeeper of the body and it is the only organ of the body which comes in contact with the external environment and its important to take its utmost care.
