The violence that started during a procession on Ram Navmi is still continued. Stone-pelting near a level crossing in Rishra last night led to suspension of train services on the Howrah-Bandel section for about 3 hours. The movement of trains resumed post midnight. Tension prevailed in Rishra this morning. Most shops remained closed and people stayed indoors after police clamped prohibitory orders. Police and riot control personnel also conducted marches in Rishra and adjoining Serampore.

Meanwhile, Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited Rishra in Hooghly district and assured strict action against those involved in the violence. “There will be solid action by all enforcement agencies. We will never allow miscreants to take law in hand, police will come down heavily on them. Bengal has been suffering for a long time, we will put an end to it,” the Governor said. The Governor was in Darjeeling for a G20 meeting, but cut short his trip and rushed to Rishra.
Kaushik Mitra, CPRO, Northern Railway said movement of the trains on the Howrah – Bundel section was suspended from 10.06 PM due to stone-pelting incident. However, as the situation got normal the trains were resumed at 01.07 AM. Now the trains are running normally on Howrah – Bundel and Howrah – Birdwan section.
The incident of stone-pelting was reported near Rishra railway station last night. Subsequently, additional security forces have been deployed in the area. police clamped section 144 of CRPC in Rishra and Serampur area to maintain law and order. DCP Ujjaval Das said,” Situation is normal and RFP and GRP have undertaken flag march jointly.
