Nearly 97,000 COVID-19 cases, 446 deaths reported in a day in India

The health ministry on Tuesday informed that over 96,982 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 1.26 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 8.31 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 43 lakh people were vaccinated on Monday.

So far, the biggest single-day surge of 1.03 lakh COVID-19 cases was reported in India on April 5, 2021. The second-highest surge of 97,894 COVID-19 cases was recorded on September 17. It is followed by 95,570 cases reported on September 12.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.65 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 446 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,65,547.

Previously, the death toll had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

1.16 crore patients recovered

Of the over 1.26 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 7.88 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 6.21 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.17 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 92.48 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March and April. Otherwise, there had been a gradual rise in the recovery rate.

Over 25.02 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 25.02 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 14.92 lakh samples were tested on September 24. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.23 lakh samples was tested on September 30. Over 12.11 lakh tests were carried out on April 5.

446 deaths in a day

Of the 446 deaths reported in a day, 155 deaths are from Maharashtra, 11 from Tamil Nadu and 12 from Karnataka. Five deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 13 deaths and West Bengal reported four deaths. Gujarat reported 15 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 15 deaths. Delhi reported 15 deaths. Punjab reported 72 deaths.

No death has been registered from Odisha. Rajasthan reported 12 deaths, whereas Bihar reported three deaths. Two deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported six deaths.

No fatality has been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported two deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 10 deaths. Puducherry reported no death and 12 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
