India reports 91,702 COVID-19 cases, 3,403 deaths in a day as Maharashtra fixes tally


The Union health ministry on Friday informed that over 91,702 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.92 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 24.60 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 32.74 lakh people were vaccinated on Thursday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

3.63 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 3,403 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 3,63,079. The relatively high surge in deaths is due to the Maharashtra government revising its death figures.

Previously, the death toll had touched 4,529-mark on May 19.

Over 2.77 crore patients recovered

Of the over 2.92 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 11.21 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 3.83 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 2.77 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 94.93 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 37.42 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 37.42 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 22.17 lakh samples were tested on May 25. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 21.59 lakh samples was tested on June 2. Over 20.44 lakh samples were tested on June 10.

3,403 deaths in a day

Of the 3,403 deaths reported in a day, 1,915 deaths are from Maharashtra that revised its death tally, 358 from Tamil Nadu and 194 from Karnataka. Sixty-seven deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 81 deaths and West Bengal reported 87 deaths. Gujarat reported 11 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 34 deaths. Delhi reported 44 deaths. Punjab reported 74 deaths.

Forty-four deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 23 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 23 deaths. Twenty-five deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 14 deaths.

Fifty-one fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 29 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported five deaths. Puducherry reported nine deaths and 194 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
