Days after increasing the fine for spitting in public and not wearing a mask, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has collected Rs3.5 lakh as fine from offenders. It has in all fined 856 people for not wearing masks and collected a fine worth Rs2,56,800. The rest Rs1,02,500 was collected as fine from paan shop owners. Of the total number of people fined, the highest were in the south zone where 181 people had been caught without masks. The second highest was in the east zone where 162 people had been fined. Apart from this, 376 units were sealed. All the units that were sealed were paan shops in the city. The highest number of sealings were in the south zone where 67 units were sealed followed by the north west zone where 65 units were sealed.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had hiked the fine for not wearing a mask and spitting in public to help contain the spread of COVID-19 in the city.
The civic body had increased the fine for not wearing a mask from Rs200 to Rs500. Spitting in public also attracted a fine of Rs500. The civic body had also decided to impose a fine of Rs10,000 on any paan shop owners whose customers are found spitting near the vicinity.
