70,421 COVID-19 cases, 3,921 deaths reported in India in a day

The health ministry on Monday informed that over 70,421 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.95 crore. It is the lowest single-day surge in cases since April 2.

The ministry also informed that over 25.48 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 14.99 lakh people were vaccinated on Saturday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

3.74 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 3,921 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 3,74,305.

Previously, the death toll had touched 4,529-mark on May 19.

Over 2.81 crore patients recovered

Of the over 2.95 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 9.73 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 3.30 per cent of the total caseload. Over 2.81 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 95.43 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 37.96 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 37.96 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 22.17 lakh samples were tested on May 25. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 21.59 lakh samples was tested on June 2. Over 14.92 lakh samples were tested on June 13.

3,921 deaths in a day

Of the 3,921 deaths reported in a day, 2,771 deaths are from Maharashtra, 267 from Tamil Nadu and 125 from Karnataka. Fifty-eight deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 51 deaths and West Bengal reported 84 deaths. Gujarat reported six deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 18 deaths. Delhi reported 23 deaths. Punjab reported 59 deaths.

Forty-five deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported seven deaths, whereas Bihar reported eight deaths. Twelve deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 15 deaths.

Thirty-six fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported seven deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported two deaths. Puducherry reported seven deaths and 206 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
