Seven held for public birthday celebration in Surat


Even as the government warns about COVID-19 and the need to maintain social distancing and wear a mask, for some, the warnings fall on deaf ears. The authorities had one such case in Surat, were unmindful of the warnings and dangers, few people came together to celebrate a birthday in public.

A video of some youth in Vesu area in Surat celebrating a birthday in public without a mask and social distancing has gone viral. Following an uproar on social media, the authorities have swung into action and detained seven people including a girl.


A probe revealed that Nikunj Modi, a resident of Vesu in Surat had his birthday on August 14. His friends gathered to celebrate his birthday. Some eight people gathered on the road to make it a public celebration which among other things included cutting a cake on a bike parked on a road.

After a video of the incident went viral, cops booked seven people in connection with the incident. As per the guidelines issued by the state, in wake of COVID-19 public celebrations cannot have more than four people.

Moreover, such celebrations need to be done with a mask in place and social distancing being maintained. Unfortunately, none of the guidelines was followed when the birthday celebration was on.

A complaint has been registered against Nikunj Modi and his friends with the Umra Police station for violation of notification.

Gujarat COVID-19

Gujarat has been recording a continuous rise in COVID-19. Surat has been recording the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the state for over a month now.

Gujarat COVID-19 numbers on Tuesday crossed 80,000 as the state recorded 1,126 new COVID-19 cases. With this, the total number of such cases in the state now stands at 80,942. The state has in all recorded 14,410 active cases of which 78 are on ventilator support.

The state also saw 20 fatalities due to the disease. Of this, seven were in Surat and four in Ahmedabad. Two deaths each were reported from Bhavnagar, Kutch and Amreli. Gir-Somnath, Rajkot and Vadodara recorded one death each.
