62,714 COVID-19 cases, 312 deaths in a day in India

In a major cause of concern for the Centre and the state, the health ministry on Sunday informed that 62,714 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. It is the biggest single-day surge in cases since October last year. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 1.19 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 6.02 crore people have been vaccinated so far. Of it, 21.54 lakh people were vaccinated on Saturday.

So far, the biggest single-day surge of 97,894 COVID-19 cases was reported in India on September 17. The second-highest surge of 97,570 COVID-19 cases was recorded on September 12. It is followed by 96,551 cases reported on September 11.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.61 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 312 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,61,552.

Previously, the death toll had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

Similarly, the biggest surge of over 97,894 cases was reported on September 17.

1.13 crore patients recovered

Of the over 1.19 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 4.86 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 4.06 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.13 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 94.59 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March. Otherwise, there had been a gradual rise in the recovery rate.

Over 24.09 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 24.09 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 14.92 lakh samples were tested on September 24. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.23 lakh samples was tested on September 30. Over 11.81 lakh tests were carried out on March 27.

312 deaths in a day

Of the 312 deaths reported in a day, 166 deaths are from Maharashtra, nine from Tamil Nadu and eight from Karnataka. No death has been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported four deaths and West Bengal reported two deaths. Gujarat reported five deaths. Madhya Pradesh reported 10 deaths and Delhi reported 10 deaths. Punjab reported 45 deaths.

One death has been registered from Odisha. No death has been reported from Rajasthan, whereas Bihar reported two deaths. One death has been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and three deaths have been reported from Telangana.

No fatality has been reported from Assam, whereas one death has been registered in Puducherry and four deaths in Jharkhand. Uttarakhand reported one death, whereas 14 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
