60,471 COVID-19 cases, 2,726 deaths reported in India in a day


The health ministry on Tuesday informed that over 60,471 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.95 crore. It is the lowest single-day surge in cases in the past 75 days.

The ministry also informed that over 25.90 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 39.27 lakh people were vaccinated on Monday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

3.77 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 2,726 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 3,77,031.

Previously, the death toll had touched 4,529-mark on May 19.

Over 2.82 crore patients recovered

Of the over 2.95 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 9.13 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 3.09 per cent of the total caseload. Over 2.82 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 95.64 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 38.13 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 38.13 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 22.17 lakh samples were tested on May 25. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 21.59 lakh samples was tested on June 2. Over 17.51 lakh samples were tested on June 14.

2,726 deaths in a day

Of the 2,726 deaths reported in a day, 1,592 deaths are from Maharashtra, 254 from Tamil Nadu and 120 from Karnataka. Fifty-nine deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 72 deaths and West Bengal reported 78 deaths. Gujarat reported six deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 36 deaths. Delhi reported 16 deaths. Punjab reported 40 deaths.

Forty-four deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 20 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 13 deaths. Nine deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 12 deaths.

Forty-three fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 25 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported one death. Puducherry reported seven deaths and 161 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
