Gujarat police are gearing up for the civic body polls in six municipal corporations on February 21. As part of its preparations, cops have put 25000 people under preventive detention and 48,000 have had their weapons deposited with the police.
Checking has also been intensified and Rs7.10 cr worth of alcohol has been seized so far from rural areas while Rs93 lakh worth of alcohol was caught from towns in the state.
In all, 50,000 cops have been pressed into service for elections in the six municipal corporations. Preventive detention has also been carried out for 7000 history sheeters in all the six municipal corporations of the state.
The state police have also intensified efforts to nab absconding criminals and in a month 1,401 people who had jumped jail were nabbed.
97 check posts have been put up along state borders that connect Gujarat to its neighboring states and union territories as part of the search and checking operations ahead of the elections.
All the 3,411 polling booths have been given security with a particular focus on sensitive booths. In all 44 units of SRP, 25000 cops, 15,500 home guards will be stationed for election duty on Sunday. Cops will also be patrolling near booths to help avoid any untoward incident.
