India reports 46,148 COVID-19 cases, 979 deaths in a day

The health ministry on Monday informed that 46,148 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 3.02 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 32.36 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 17.21 lakh people were vaccinated on Sunday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

3.96 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 979 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 3,96,730

Previously, the death toll had touched 4,529-mark on May 19.

Over 2.93 crore patients recovered

Of the over 3.02 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 5.72 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 1.89 per cent of the total caseload. Over 2.93 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 96.80 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 40.63 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 40.63 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 22.17 lakh samples were tested on May 25. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 21.59 lakh samples was tested on June 2. Over 15.70 lakh samples were tested on June 27.

979 deaths in a day

Of the 979 deaths reported in a day, 405 deaths are from Maharashtra, 91 from Tamil Nadu and 89 from Karnataka. Thirty-three deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 75 deaths and West Bengal reported 29 deaths. Gujarat reported three deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 21 deaths. Delhi reported four deaths. Punjab reported 12 deaths.

Thirty-nine deaths have been registered from Odisha, Rajasthan reported four death and Bihar reported one death. Eight deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported eight deaths.

Thirty-seven fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported two deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported one death. Puducherry reported three deaths and 62 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
