India records highest single-day surge of 4,529 deaths due to COVID-19

The health ministry on Wednesday informed that over 2.67 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.67 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 18.58 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 13.12 lakh people were vaccinated on Tuesday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

2.83 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 4,529 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. It is the highest single-day surge in COVID-19 related deaths in India since the pandemic began last year. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 2,83,248. Previously, the death toll had touched 4,328-mark on May 18.

Over 2.19 crore patients recovered

Of the over 2.67 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 33.26 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 12.66 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 2.19 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 86.23 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 32.03 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 32.03 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 20.08 lakh samples were tested on May 18. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 19.83 lakh samples was tested on May 11. Over 18.69 lakh samples were tested on May 17.

4,529 deaths in a day

Of the 4,529 deaths reported in a day, 1,291 deaths are from Maharashtra, 364 from Tamil Nadu and 525 from Karnataka. Ninety-nine deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 255 deaths and West Bengal reported 145 deaths. Gujarat reported 67 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 70 deaths. Delhi reported 265 deaths. Punjab reported 231 deaths.

Twenty-two deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 146 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 111 deaths. Seventy-one deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 27 deaths.

Seventy-three fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 98 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 62 deaths. Puducherry reported 33 deaths and 97 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
