India records highest single-day surge of 4,329 deaths due to COVID-19


The health ministry on Tuesday informed that over 2.63 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.63 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 18.44 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 15.10 lakh people were vaccinated on Monday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

2.78 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 4,328 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. It is the highest single-day surge in COVID-19 related deaths in India since the pandemic began last year. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 2,78,719. Previously, the death toll had crossed 4,205-mark on May 12.

Over 2.15 crore patients recovered

Of the over 2.63 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 33.53 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 13.29 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 2.15 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 85.60 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 31.82 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 31.82 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 19.83 lakh samples were tested on May 11. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 19.23 lakh samples was tested on May 5. Over 18.69 lakh samples were tested on May 17.

4,329 deaths in a day

Of the 4,329 deaths reported in a day, 1,000 deaths are from Maharashtra, 335 from Tamil Nadu and 476 from Karnataka. 109 deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 271 deaths and West Bengal reported 147 deaths. Gujarat reported 81 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 77 deaths. Delhi reported 340 deaths. Punjab reported 191 deaths.

Twenty-two deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 157 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 96 deaths. Seventy-three deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 30 deaths.

Ninety-two fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 223 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 60 deaths. Puducherry reported 28 deaths and 87 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
