427 new COVID cases, over 61k senior citizens get vaccinated on Day 1 of 3rd phase

Gujarat continued to register over 400 COVID cases with the state recording 427 new cases in the last 24 hours. In all 360 patients were cured of the disease. The state also saw a death due to COVID which was recorded in AMC limits. As of now, the state has 2429 active cases of which 35 are on a ventilator while the rest are stable. The state has so far discharged over 2.63 lakh patients while the total fatalities stand at 4,411.

Ahmedabad corporation recorded 96 new cases while Surat and Vadodara corporation had 61 and 73 cases respectively. Rajkot Municipal Corporation also reported 44 cases. No cases were recorded from six districts of the state. These districts were Botad, Jamnagar, Navsari, Patan, Porbandar, and Tapi.
The state has a recovery rate of 97.47%.

The state has been seeing a surge in COVID cases since the elections. After reporting fewer than 300 cases each day since February 1, Gujarat has been witnessing a rise in cases in major cities and districts.

COVID vaccination in the state

The third phase of vaccination from March 1 onwards began on Monday under which those above the age of 60 years and those above 40 years of age but with severe ailments will get vaccinated. Vaccination is available at both private and government hospitals. Vaccination costs Rs250 per dose in private hospitals while it will be free in government hospitals.

In all 61,254 people above 60 years of age and those above 40 suffering from serious ailments got vaccinated. So far 8.83 lakh people have received the first dose of the vaccine while 1.89 lakh people have received the second dose of the vaccine.

Efforts to prevent COVID

The AMC has also restarted testing kiosks across the city and has been declaring new micro-containment zones for the last many days. The Gujarat government also announced that it will set up border check posts to screen people coming from the neighboring states of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

It has also decided to screen passengers at major railway stations like Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar. Passengers at airports in the state are also being screened.
